How to Search the Names Database

Here you can search for a Canadian who was killed in WWI and find the date and time that their name will appear. The names include those killed in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the Canadian Merchant Navy and the Canadian Army Medical Corps.

To begin, enter a surname in the box above and click 'Search'. If you have more information, such as First Name, Initial or Service Number, enter it above to help narrow the search result. A successful search will display the individual's name, Service Number, Rank, Regiment, Death date and the date and time their name will appear.

The time displayed will be accurate only for the vigil in Ypres, Belgium. The search results page will tell you how to recalculate your search result time for each vigil location in Canada. Each name in the vigil will appear simultaneously in all locations, from Belgium to Newfoundland to British Columbia.

The names projected in the vigil are taken from Canada's Virtual War Memorial data base at www.vac-acc.gc.ca and include Canadian war deaths up to and including 1922. The deaths recorded from 1919 to 1922 represent Canadians who died of their wounds in the years after the war. For more information about each of the 68,000, including their place of burial, you can explore the following sites: www.cwgc.org or www.warmuseum.ca.

The more specific the memory the more powerful the experience of remembering.

Canada 1914-1918 Ypres is made possible through the generous support of Veterans Affairs Canada.
